Laura loved the outdoors. It was the perfect place for one to just sit back, relax a little, and try to be one’s self. She has been here for hours, just gotten here after school, in fact, and so far, as usual, she had been by herself, and generally left alone. This was good on her part, for she could practice trying to change her eye color again. The unfortunate thing was that she had to look at herself with a mirror and concentrate on it, so everyone, who was a very small few, who passed her thought she was really vain.
So far, she was having no success at all getting her eye color to change. Her mother had just gotten so excited when Laura was able to change her hair blonde the other day that she was pushing Laura hard to see how much of these harder changes she could do. To be able to change one’s self without copying another person’s body. And at such a young age. Her mother had been bouncing off the walls. Except… that had been the only thing she could change, and she had been here for hours. Personally, she was starting to have a huge eye strain, and she now officially hates her left eye shape.
She put the mirror in her bag, crossed her legs on her little log, and looked out over the creek. At the end of it, near the lake, she could see the sun starting to set. That meant dusk, and her mother would want her home in a couple of hours. One thing she was glad her mother wasn’t one of those parents who restrains you and has to know where you are twenty-four seven. Just as long as she had her cell phone on her and was at home by ten, unless otherwise discussed, her mother was fine. She put her chin in her hand, and watched the sun for a bit.

JUST ONE LOOK FROM YOUR EYES WAS LIKE A CERTAIN KIND OF TORTURE Christopher had only been in town for two weeks, and he'd only been attending High Water Academy for one of those weeks, but he'd already joined a clique he felt comfortable in. They weren't the most popular, but they were made up of the sons and daughters of the richest families in the city. He'd run across people he'd clicked with instantly, and plenty others whom he'd found repulsive, but the friends he had now were even better friends than the ones back in Connecticut.
During recess there had been mention of the group skipping out on last period classes and driving over to Lake Michigan. One of the girls - a particularly cute girl - had told him that the lake was perhaps the most beautiful thing she'd ever seen, and Chris was excited to see it. But by the time final period arrived, several people dropped out of the plans to cut class and it left only Christopher and a couple of the guys.
They dropped the Lake Michigan plans and decided to simply head over to the park. It was a brisk day out but there were no signs of rain or snow. The boys sat on the creek bank and threw pebbles into the tiny stream and joking around about which one of them was worse at picking up girls. Chris looked up when one of the stones made a huge splash and sent water up onto the creek bank.
He didn't notice that his designer jeans were wet, he didn't hear the yelling and rough-housing of his new friends, for when he looked up he saw someone across the creek. He couldn't make out her features from so far away, but he was automatically curious. She was all alone, staring out into space.
Usually, when Chris saw girls, he had no problems with expressing his interest. He could easily approach them and chat them up, not caring if he seemed too forward. But something inside him stopped him from crossing the bridge and introducing himself, as he would have normally done. All he could do was stare. ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE TOGETHER? Did you ever get the feeling you were being watched? Laura did a lot, unfortunatly. If people were talking about her and stealing glances at her, or if just staring at her to be annoying, Laura felt it a bit. It must have been one those things that come with being a sort of Loner. You don't often get looked at or stared at, so when it does happen, you can feel it. Laura could feel it now. It was like a tingling feeling that started in her lower back, travelled up her spine, and made her entire torso shiver. She was sure she was being watched.
She looked in the direction away from the creek, expecting to see and animal or something, after doing a good inspection over there, she shook her head and then looked towards the creek... and then back at the bridge, where she found the starer and looked right into his eyes. And... everything stopped. All she could do was look at him and stare just as he was staring right at her. Her thoughts scrambled up, she couldn't seem to hear, and the idea of maybe looking away didn't ever cross her mind.
What her thoughts did bring up was random pieces of information she had picked up from snipets of conversation, all of which seemed to connect to this boy she couldn't stop staring at. For one, a new family moved in a couple weeks ago. He started in school about a week ago, almost near automatic popularity status. She had head a whole bunch of chatter about him, but she had never seen him. He was a senior, and she well, wasn't. So, no classes with him, and it wasn't like Laura put herself in the way of populars. Why bother.
Involuntarily, her legs made her slowly stand up, as if she had no control over her body at all. Something in the back of her mind was screaming things at her like "what are you doing?" and other such things. The concious and apparently in control part of her being ignored it completely.

JUST ONE LOOK FROM YOUR EYES WAS LIKE A CERTAIN KIND OF TORTURE Christopher knew the game. He knew how to play it and he knew that he was good at it. He knew the procedure, how to approach a girl without look like a complete creep. How to speak to her in a casual way so there was no pressure, but at the same time with enough permanence that she wouldn't completely dismiss him. He knew what to say to make the subject of his interest to giggle softly, to blush pink and to stammer just a little. Enough to tip him off to how much she was interested.
But as he stared at this girl, all strategy, all technique, all of his lines, they fled his mind. They abandoned him and all he could do was stare. He didn't move an inch as she got up and moved towards him, towards the bridge.
Vaguely, Chris could hear his friends speaking.
'Who's the chick?'
'No idea. She's cute though.'
'I think she's in my sister's year.'
He could their words, and he understood each word, but they didn't register in him. Chris had no idea what they were yammering on about, because they didn't really exist in this moment. It wasn't until one of his friends nudge him in the shoulder than Chris woke up. He glanced away from the girl and glared at Karl, wondering why the hell the kid was bothering him.
'You right, man?' Karl asked. But Chris couldn't speak. He swallowed thickly and turned his glance to the girl once more. What the hell was going on? ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE TOGETHER? FORBIDDEN LOVE FORBIDDEN LOVE

Something bumped into him, and he looked away. She hadn't even noticed the other guys before. Which was odd, she knew them all from school. They were mostly guys. All of them were staring in between her and the guy who had... caught her attention. All the rest of the information that didn't have to do with the boy himself. She looked at the ground thoughtfully, realizing suddenly she was standing, and tried to place the feeling.
The only thing she could directly place it as was what her father had told her mother before he was executed him. For this reason, her mother had always told her to keep herself open for her soulmate. Not that Laura had a problem in the first place keeping herself free, for that matter, but her mother told her to do it anyway. Lillian was just trying to protect her daughter from the hurt that she had gone through. "With luck," Lillian had told Laura, "You're soulmate might be a shapeshifter."
With a little shake of her head, she tried to figure out why these memories tied in with this moment. She stole a look back at the boy across the bridge. They were all staring at her now. It finally clicked however, after a few seconds of her looking at him. The description of what it had been like when he met his soulmate. Time had stopped, and it was like nothing else mattered. Which also made her want to make sure she wasn't driving a vehicle or something when it happened.
She knew now. He was her soulmate. There was only one problem that screamed at her that automatically flinch a little.
Human.

JUST ONE LOOK FROM YOUR EYES WAS LIKE A CERTAIN KIND OF TORTURE She stopped. Why was she stopping? Christopher opened his mouth automatically, but couldn't think of anything to say. His brain had left him minutes ago and there nothing left but a strange pulling sensation. It was similar to the feeling he got when he held two magnets between his fingers. Chris felt as if he was a magnet and this girl was his mate.
He could hear snickers from behind him - his friends. They were laughing at her. Perhaps because she was just standing there, staring. Chris felt his features tense. He was glaring in her direction. But he wasn't mad at her, he was made at the idiots who were insulting her; Chris just couldn't look away.
As the anger grew, as did that magnetism. The senior got to his feet and let them move for him. The laughing stopped, only to be replaced by whispers and quiet jeering. Chris allowed his body to push itself towards the girl and stopped a few feet from her. He was close enough to see her features properly now, and he was blown away. Chris was completely stunned, but wasn't even embarrassed enough to look away.
Now that he was so close to her, he felt his body change. His skin was on fire, his heart had gone from jackhammer to unhealthy and he could hear whooshing. Chris had passed out only once in his lifetime - when he'd gotten sunstroke in Florida - but the sound was the same. He didn't feel light headed or faint, but that sound drowned out everything else. It sounded like the ocean, or like the inside of a seashell. As if they were in a vacuum and nothing else existed.
Christopher reached his hand out, but it faltered and just looked awkward. What was he doing? Aware of himself, and of his onlooking friends, Chris pulled his hand back and allowed himself to look bashful. He realized, then, that the girl didn't look very happy. In fact, there was something else in her eyes - blue eyes, so gorgeous - something that was like ... fear. Fear was bad. ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE TOGETHER? FORBIDDEN LOVE FORBIDDEN LOVE

As Laura watched, he seemed to get angry at her. She couldn't really hear the others, for staring at him had made the time stop thing happen again. But he was looking right at her, and he looked angry. It made her want to run to him and ask what she had done, to automatically try to make it ok, to make it right again, but another concious part of her kept her rooted to the spot. Really, if her normal self had had a choice, she would have ran.
Then he got up and started to walk towards her. He seemed to still be angry, and it would have been about now that the normal Laura would have started running. But now it was both sides of her brain keeping her rooted to the spot, and she couldn't move. Inside her head a fight was raging. One side, the seemingly more powerful side at the moment, was telling her that this was her souldmate, and that she would be in love with him forever. The other side, the one she assumed was Laura, was trying to tell her that to fall in love with a human would just get her in the exact same mess as her father.
As he got closer, the urge to run out to him and hold on and never let go got stronger. And it felt as if she were going to faint if she didn't move, but something still kept her rooted. When he finally stopped in front of her. He still seemed a bit angry, but a little less so. He reached out towards her, and her hand ached to reach out and grasp it, but she fought to keep it down. She didn't have to fight for long anyway, for he put his hand down, and looked actually kind of embarrassed about it. She wasn't really surprised.
It was when he looked up at her face that she realized that the emotion plastered on it was the same as the one when she realized he was human, and that she could die for this feeling. Fear. She tried to fight it.

JUST ONE LOOK FROM YOUR EYES WAS LIKE A CERTAIN KIND OF TORTURE Everything inside him was in turmoil. He'd never met a girl he wanted to be with longer than a night. But there was something about this girl, something that made him want to change. He didn't want to be the kind who played girls every weekend, he wanted to be the 'good boyfriend' type. But that feeling was battling with his confusion. Who was this girl? Why was he feeling like this? What was it about the city?
Chris opened his mouth, wanting to actually speak this time. He was going to introduce himself, perhaps find out her name. But before he could utter a sound, Karl called out.
'Oi Lewis, we're gonna get back now! The girls just called.'
Girls? What girls? Right, the girls from school. Chris vaguely remembered them wanting to all catch up after school. They must have gotten home already.
"Oh," Chris said, responding to Karl but not speaking loud enough for him to hear. Disappointment seeped into his voice, into his expression. He didn't want to leave. Just the thought of leaving felt ... painful? But not physical pain, not even emotional pain. He wouldn't have been able to point the pain out to someone, it was ... deeper. It was strange, and unfamiliar. "I..."What could he say? He trailed off and glanced back at his friends. They were just standing there, waiting for him. How else could he get home? He didn't know his way around town yet. Chris turned back at the girl with a look of apology and then started back towards his friends.[/blockquote] ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE TOGETHER? FORBIDDEN LOVE FORBIDDEN LOVE ooc. i thought we could end the thread here? and have them meet up again at like school or something. sorta like a 'oh you're that kid i saw at the park'

His mouth opened, as if he was about to speak, and Laura found herself involuntarily excited. Her heart did somersaults at the mere idea of it. She wasn't sure when he finally spoke if she would be able to speak herself, she'd probably just be lost in his words. And then probably faint, some part of her subconcious whined sarcastically.
But before he could speak, some blasted popular imbecile opened his mouth and ruined it. She had questions she wanted to ask him, and apparently they were pulling him away to go get some girls. Sure, trust her luck to not only find a soulmate in a human, but in a man who has probalby already been claimed by girls, and heck probably already has a girlfirend. Well there's a twisted fate for you.
She was glad when he finally did speak, and her ears heard the noise and rejoiced in it, despite the fact that he sounded so unhappy and dissapointed. It was painful for her to hear. He tried to speak again, and Laura caught her breath. She unfortunatly held it for a long time, for he looked behind him, to his friends she supposed, gave her a look of appology and then turned away.
Her body wanted to latch on him, tell him not to go, but the hidded Laura in her head told her to let him go. Let him go get his head messed up by the popular girls, the pretty girls, and see if he forgets this. She hoped, in some small part of her being, that he would, for both their sakes. Laura had always told herself if something like this happened, she would fight it, but now that she had felt that pull, that need to be with him, to hear his voice, to look at his face, run a hand through that beautiful blonde hair... she wasn't sure she could fight it. It was too strong.
Slightly afraid of the need to stop him winning, she forced herself backwards, then forced herself to her bag, and then ran in the opposite direction from the other boys and Him, fighting the urge all the way to stop and turn around. She ran up to the top of the hill, and under the cover of trees, watched him go. The further she was from him, the easier it was to leave, though the aching feeling was still there. One thing was for certain: she had to talk to her mom, or someone. Someone who could give her advice. There would be no staying out late for her today. She was going home and wrapping herself in her blankets and not getting up until this feeling went away.
